USPOREDBA UGRAĐENOG, SAMOSTALNOG I PRIKLJUČNOG PROGRAMA ZA RENDERIRANJE

Sažetak

U ovom radu je provedena usporedba tri različita programa za renderiranje, od kojih je jedan ugrađeni u Autodesk Fusion 360, drugi je eksterni program KeyShot, a treći je plug-in (dodatak) za Blender; LuxBlend. U prvom programu Autodesk Fusionu 360 model sata je modeliran primjenjujući četiri različita materijala: plastika, srebro, zlato i drvo, koji se koriste upravo zbog teškoće prikaza realnosti, jer ljudsko oko dobro prepoznaje umjetno generiranu sliku od prave fotografije. Zatim je isti sat renderiran u izabranim  programima. Usporedba između programa očituje se u kvaliteti i vremenu renderiranja slika, jer vrijeme i kvaliteta su međusobno povezani i u većini slučajeva proporcionalni. Za sve programe odabrano je isto ili približno okruženje, ovisno o mogućnostima korištenih programa, koji se razlikuju po izboru materijala, mogućnostima osvjetljenja i drugim postavkama.

COMPARISON OF BUILT-IN, STANDALONE AND PLUG-IN PROGRAMS FOR RENDERING

Abstract

The main topic of this research is a comparison of three different rendering programs, of which one of them is built-in in 3D modeling program Autodesk Fusion 360, second is exterior program KeyShot used only to render imported files and third is plug-in LuxBlend. In Autodesk Fusion a model of a clock is made and rendered in four different materials: plastic, silver, gold and wood, which are used because of the difficulties of displaying material reality. Afterwards clock was rendered in the other two selected programs. A comparison which has been made is difference in quality of visual appearance and time elapsed for rendered graphic image because time and quality are connected and in most cases proportional.  In all programs selected was approximate environment, depending on possibilities of used programs, which differ in choice of material, lighting possibilities and other options.

1. Uvod

1. Introduction

Nowadays more and more in graphic industry are used rendered images instead of photographs, so for example 75% of IKEA-s catalogue is CGI (computer generated imagery), even though real sets of furniture exist, it’s easier to make generated image [1].  Barring many programs for 3D modeling, there are also many programs for rendering, some are free for use (LuxRender, Kerkythea, Renderman, Cycles render etc.), and they can connect with certain programs. [2][3][4].  On the market are also paid renders such as Keyshot, Arion, Lightwave, Corona, V ray, Indigo etc., and in this research is used Keyshot render [5][6][7]. There are many technical characteristic of programs for rendering such as if one uses CPU or GPU for hardware support, but here accent is given to visual experience of final image of clock which is modeled. Autodesk Fusion 360 as program for modeling and first renderer, for second renderer is used Keyshot [8] as external renderer and third program is plugin for Blender LuxBlend. [9]. All images rendered in this research are made on Dell Inspiron with Intel i5 5200 CPU, NVidia GeForce 920 M graphic card and 8 GB RAM. Rendering time reduces if it’s made on high-end devices. This device is medium range.

The production of 3D models begins in most of cases from sketches. Sketch is made in a same way as in other graphic programs such as Photoshop or Illustrator. After making the main sketch using different tools for drawing lines, quadrates, circles and so on, model is being made by extracting pads into objects until finalization. Final model can be additionally smoothed and round off as wanted. Figure one below shoes the image sketch on which the model is made. In this case, image is symmetrically copied into full shape of clock from which parts of clock were made. Every part of clock is put into separate body parts (objects) so its materials can be changed afterwards in rendering procedure. If every part that assembles clock was one object (body part) materials couldn’t be different (changed for different parts) and in this particular case that is not wanted.

The main difference between these three renderers is the fact that Fusion 360 and KeyShot rendererd have finite time of rendering, which means that programes render specific time until image is rendered (and time depends on previously set quality for images) and LuxBlend renders until we decide that image is good enough. That process can last several hours, depending on computer configuration, i.e graphic card posibillities. In this case, images rendered in LuxRender were rendered one hour each, so that image quality would somewhat be equal to Fusion’s and KeyShot’s renders, and even images were rendered relativel long, noise is still present. Noise reduction is better if rendering proccess is longer, and if light adjustments are better.

On figures 8 and 9 is wooden clock shown in two view points rendred in Autodesk Fusion.  Wodden clock on figure 9 looks more realistic due to viewing angle and light reflection, and one on figure 8 looks somewhat flat. Used materials are Cherry gloss wood for clock frame, legs, bells numeric insignias, hands are black plastic, golden background and transparent glass.

On figures 10 and 11 are shown plastic clocks models rendered in Keyshot renderer. Used is blue plastic for clock frame, legs and bells, yellow plastic for number insignias and hands, white background and transparent glass. Both renderers look quite realistic.

Used is polished silver material for clock frame, legs, bells, number insignias and hands, also white background and transparent glass. Clock in figure 13 looks more realistic, due to angle and shadow.

Figures 14 and 15 show goden clocks rendered in Keyshot renderer. Used is 24 carat gold material for clock frame, legs, bells, number insignias and hands, also white background and transparent glass. Both golden clocks look equally realistic.

Clock in figure 21 looks more realistic, due to angle and shadow position.

Figures 22 and 23 show goden clocks rendered in LuxBlend renderer. Used is gold material for clock frame, legs, bells, number insignias and hands, also white background and transparent glass. Clock on the figure 23 looks slightly more realistic, even though the golden material looks very realistic on both pictures.

Based on images rendered in this two specified programs, it can be concluded that even though Autodesk Fusion is primarily program for modeling, with many drawing tools and tools for mechanical production joints, pistons etc., rendered models are not badly rendered, unrecognizable or in low resolution. Downside of Autodesk Fusion is lack of materials to choose, e.g. types of gold, plastic, wood, cloth which in KeyShot are in great assortment. Also, background lighting, and camera movement which when moved alters only the model’s shadow but not the illumination on the model itself, so it looks that hands on clock are completely flat. Further on, glass on the clock which combines with the plastic frame, has in regard to light source strange edge (visible on figure 2, plastic clock Autodesk Fusion). The KeyShot renderer, program which is exclusively intended to render models, has much more to offer regarding detail changing. Possibility to change background colors, images, camera movement, large base of material options, video recording, animation, etc. Images can show very good depth when clock is frontally looked at, and it is clear that e.g. clock hands and number insignias have volume. When the time to render images is considered, Autodesk Fusion and KeyShot renders do have limited time for rendering, and LuxBlend may render infinitely. Downside of LuxBlend is noisiness of images, time of rendering must be relatively long to produce satisfactory image. That problem is best seen in figure 24 wooden clock rendered in LuxBlend on golden detail. In KeyShot render there is progress bar and time of rendering lasts until model is fully rendered and program saves the image in selected folder. Finally, conclusion is that between these three renders, when rendering clock, KeyShot provides best renders, images are better, sharper and materials are easily recognized. Renders in Autodesk fusion are somewhat worse, but not that bad considering the fact that this program’s primary function is 3D modeling, and LuxBlend gives relatively good renders, with high material discernibility, especially golden material, figures 22 and 23 golden clock LuxBlend.

Patrik Ervells latest collection is ironically titled “Software”ADIDAS ORIGINALS TUBULAR SHADOW.
