PROBLEMS WITH MACHINE TRANSLATION OF PROFESSIONAL AND SCIENTIFIC PAPERS IN THE FIELD OF PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE EXAMPLE OF ONLINE TRANSLATION TOOLS

Sažetak

Sve veća potreba za komunikacijom u međunarodnim znanstvenim i stručnim krugovima te intenzivna znanstvena produkcija na stranim jezicima iznjedrila je i potrebu tzv. strojnog prevođenja. Rad analizira koliko je takve alate moguće unaprijediti za korištenje pri prevođenju stručnih i znanstvenih radova u području grafi čke struke, konkretno fotografi je. U praktičnom se dijelu rada uz pomoć dvaju open source alata za prevođenje prevode tekstovi iz područja fotografi je te se uvođenjem stručnog rječnika, ali i promjenom u sintaktičkom pristupu ulaznog – hrvatskog – jezika utječe na kvalitetu prijevoda te se analizira promjena u kvaliteti izlaznog teksta na engleskom jeziku. Cilj je rada pridonijeti razvoju open source alata za prevođenje stručnih i znanstvenih radova iz grafi čke struke, primarno fotografi je.

Abstract

The increasing need for communication in international scientific community and intensive scientific production in foreign languages has brought about a need for the so called machine translation. Th is paper analyses how translation tools can be improved for translation of papers in the field of graphic engineering, notably photography. In the experimental part diff erent text passages are translated with two open source translation tools. The implementation of specialist vocabulary and syntactic changes in the source language – Croatian – intends to demonstrate how the quality of target language – English – can be improved. The aim of the paper is to contribute to the quality of online translation tools for the needs of graphic engineering, in particular photography.
