Procedural generation of 3D mesh structures in additive manufacturing Abstract Fields of application of additive manufacturing today are numerous and various. Additive manufacturing, better known as 3D printing, has experienced a sharp rise in popularity after 2010 thanks to the RepRap project. The availability of low-cost 3D printers and professional services for 3D printing has resulted in an increased interest in 3D modeling and creation of 3D models that take advantage of the benefits that additive manufacturing offers. By far the most popular style of modeling and design is the use of 3D mesh structure which is very difficult or even impossible to achieve with classical methods of production. Creating models using the mesh structure has many advantages, such as saving material, accelerating development of models and futuristic look. This paper examines fields of 3D design that have the most benefit by using mesh structure and techniques of their generation, with an emphasis on procedural modeling approach that allows quick-change of model looks and geometric characteristics of mesh structure. Particular emphasis is placed on the use of the most popular consumer technology of 3D printing (Fused Deposition Modeling) for creating models that use mesh structures. The frequency of use of the mesh structure on the most popular online repository of 3D objects and 3D printed models was explored.
